A STAR IS BORN (2018) – BRADLEY COOPER

American musical romantic drama produced and directed by Bradley Cooper (in his directorial debut) with a screenplay by Cooper, Eric Roth and Will Fetters. It stars Cooper and Lady Gaga in lead roles, with Dave ChappelleAndrew Dice Clay and Sam Elliott in supporting roles. It follows an alcoholic musician (Cooper) who discovers and falls in love with a young singer (Gaga). It is the fourth American adaptation of the story, after the original 1937 romantic drama and its 1954 and 1976 remakes. Principal photography began at the Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival in April 2017.

A Star Is Born premiered at the 75th Venice International Film Festival on August 31, 2018, and was theatrically released in the United States on October 5, 2018, by Warner Bros. Pictures. It emerged as a major critical and commercial success, grossing over $436 million worldwide and receiving widespread critical acclaim for Cooper, Gaga, and Elliott’s performances and Cooper’s direction, as well as the screenplay, cinematography, and soundtrack.

ONE NIGHT IN MIAMI (2020) – REGINA KING

American drama film directed by Regina King (in her feature film directorial debut) with a screenplay by Kemp Powers, based on his 2013 stage play of the same name. The film is a fictionalized account of a meeting on February 25, 1964, between Malcolm XMuhammad AliJim Brown, and Sam Cooke in a room at the Hampton House, celebrating Ali’s surprise title win over Sonny Liston. It stars Kingsley Ben-AdirEli GoreeAldis Hodge, and Leslie Odom Jr. in the lead roles, with Lance ReddickJoaquina KalukangoNicolette Robinson, and Beau Bridges in supporting roles.

One Night in Miami premiered at the Venice Film Festival on September 7, 2020, a first for an African-American female director.[5] The film was released in limited theaters by Amazon Studios on December 25, 2020, before being released digitally on Amazon Prime Video on January 15, 2021. It received praise for King’s direction, the performances (particularly from Ben-Adir and Odom), and Powers’s screenplay.

FRUITVALE STATION (2013) – RYAN COOGLER

Though he once spent time in San Quentin, 22-year-old black man Oscar Grant (Michael B. Jordan) is now trying hard to live a clean life and support his girlfriend (Melonie Diaz) and young daughter (Ariana Neal). Flashbacks reveal the last day in Oscar’s life, in which he accompanied his family and friends to San Francisco to watch fireworks on New Year’s Eve, and, on the way back home, became swept up in an altercation with police that ended in tragedy. Based on a true story.

THE LOST DAUGHTER (2021) – MAGGIE GYLLENHALL

The Lost Daughter is a 2021 psychological drama film written and directed by Maggie Gyllenhaal (in her feature directorial debut), based on the 2006 novel of the same name by Elena Ferrante.The Lost Daughter had its world premiere at the 78th Venice International Film Festival on September 3, 2021, where Gyllenhaal won the Golden Osella Award for Best Screenplay,[7] and began a limited theatrical release in the United States on December 17, 2021, prior to streaming on December 31, 2021, by Netflix.  

GET OUT (2017) – JORDAN PEELE

Get Out is a 2017 American horror film written, co-produced, and directed by Jordan Peele in his directorial debut.  The plot follows a young black man (Kaluuya), who uncovers shocking secrets when he meets the family of his white girlfriend (Williams).It was chosen by the National Board of Review, the American Film Institute, and Time as one of the top ten films of the year. It won many accolades, including the Academy Award for Best Original Screenplay for Peele at the 90th Academy Awards, with additional nominations for Best PictureBest Director and Best Actor (Kaluuya). It also earned five nominations at the 23rd Critics’ Choice Awards, two at the 75th Golden Globe Awards and two at the 71st British Academy Film Awards

EIGHT GRADE (2018) – BO BRUNHAM

Eighth Grade is a 2018 American independent coming-of-age comedy-drama film written and directed by Bo Burnham in his feature-length directorial debut. It stars Elsie Fisher as Kayla, a teenager attending middle school who struggles with anxiety but strives to gain social acceptance from her peers during their final week of eighth grade. Upon release, the film was a critical and commercial success, grossing $13.5 million domestically.[3] The filmmakers won many awards and nominations, with Burnham winning both Writers Guild and Directors Guild of America Awards, and Fisher nominated for a Golden Globe for Best Actress and winning the Gotham Award for Breakthrough Actor. At year’s end, the National Board of Review and the American Film Institute each chose Eighth Grade 

PROMISING YOUNG WOMAN (2022) – EMRERALD FENNELL

Promising Young Woman is a 2020 film written, directed, and co-produced by Emerald Fennell in her feature directorial debut. It stars Carey Mulligan as a troubled young woman haunted by a traumatic past as she navigates balancing forgiveness and vengeance, with Bo Burnham,In North America, the film was released alongside Wonder Woman 1984News of the World, and Pinocchio, and was projected to gross around $2 million in its opening weekend.[29] It went on to debut to $719,305, finishing fifth at the box office. Some 63% of the audience were female, and 74% were aged over 25.[30] 

AFTERSUN (2022) – CHARLOTTE WELLS

ftersun is a 2022 coming-of-age drama film written and directed by Charlotte Wells in her feature directorial debut. Starring Paul MescalFrankie Corio, and Celia Rowlson-Hall. Aftersun had its world premiere at the Cannes Film Festival on 21 May 2022, where Wells was nominated for the Caméra d’Or. It was theatrically released in the United States on 21 October 2022, and in the United Kingdom on 18 November 2022. 

BOOKSMART – (2019) – OLIVIA WILDE

Booksmart is a 2019 American coming-of-age comedy film directed by Olivia Wilde (in her feature directorial debut) and written by Emily HalpernSarah HaskinsSusanna Fogel, and Katie Silberman. It stars Beanie Feldstein and Kaitlyn Dever as two graduating high school girls who set out to finally break the rules and party on their last day of classes. It received four nominations at the 76th BAFTA Awards, where Wells won for Outstanding Debut by a British Writer, Director or Producer.[3] Mescal was nominated for the Academy Award for Best Actor at the 95th Academy Awards.

SHE IS GOTTA HAVE IT (1986) – SPIKE LEE

She’s Gotta Have It is a 1986 American black-and-white comedy drama film written, produced, edited and directed by Spike Lee.[2] The film was very well received by critics and audiences. Review aggregator website Rotten Tomatoes reports a 94% score based on 32 reviews, with an average rating of 7.1/10.
