    While You Were Sleeping took a quirky premise and made it a heartwarming love story. Lucy (Sandra Bullock), a toll worker, daydreams about Peter Callaghan (Peter Gallagher) and when he goes into a coma after an accident, a misunderstanding leads his family to believe Lucy is his fiancée. More misunderstandings with the Callaghans result in Lucy falling in love with Peter’s brother, Jack (Bill Pullman). As the charming oddball heroine, this is one of Bullock’s best movies

    While the best rom-coms often take inspiration from the writer’s experiences, The Big Sick bases its entire story on star and screenwriter Kumail Nanjiani’s relationship with his co-writer Emily Gordon. Nanjiani plays a fictionalized version of himself alongside Emily (Zoe Kazan), and the two begin a relationship that is fraught because of cultural differences, and made even more complicated when Emily falls into a coma.

    Amélie is a French rom-com that follows the life of the titular character Amélie (Audery Tatou). Amélie is an imaginative, but lonely young woman, working in Paris, and in order to assuage her boredom, she sets out to make others happy, believing it will eventually help her find her own joy. The film was a massive success, earning $174 million (via Box Office Mojo) and receiving five Academy Award nominations. Unlike many of the best rom-coms, Amélie is alone for most of the film, and the movie is better for it.

    Julia Roberts stars in many of the best ’90s rom-coms, but her most famous role of the decade is Vivian in Pretty Woman, opposite Edward (Richard Gere). Pretty Woman bridges the gap between classes as Vivian, a sex worker, falls in love with Edward, a businessman who hires her to pose as his girlfriend. Pretty Woman earned Roberts her second Academy Award nomination and the movie was nominated for four Golden Globes, including a win for Roberts.`
